Local attractions

Deloraine is a picturesque historic town midway between Launceston and Devonport (approximately 50 kilometres to either, or about 45 minutes driving time). Built on the banks of the beautiful Meander River, it is home to a thriving art community and the centre of a diverse agricultural region. There is a large supermarket in the town as well as a range of shops and services to meet the visitor’s needs.

Explore the town by wandering along the riverbank or pick up a copy of A Guide to Historical Deloraine from the Great Western Tiers Visitor Centre at 100 Emu Bay Road. You can walk or drive from Tahara Cottage to many of the most prominent historic buildings in the town including The Deloraine & Districts Folk Museum which is housed at the Visitor Centre where you can also find Yarns Artwork in Silk, a community-based art project which depicts the four seasons through artwork in silk. In November of each year Deloraine hosts the Tasmanian Craft Fair, Australia’s largest working arts and crafts fair. The local area has a number of galleries that welcome visitors. Visit The Smibert Studio, home of the renowned watercolourist and international Turner expert, Tony Smibert and his artist wife, Carmel Burns.

Get close to nature by visiting the limestone caves at Mole Creek, Liffey Falls or Cradle Mountain, taking one of the many graded bushwalks in the area, trout fishing in the nearby streams and lakes or cycling on the Tasmanian Trail. Play a round of golf under the shadow of Quamby Bluff. Indulge your gourmet tastes at the 41 degrees south Salmon and Ginseng farm, the Christmas Hills raspberry farm and cafe, the Ashgrove cheese factory, the honey farms or one of the many local eateries.
